Questions and answers about Digipost
Frequently Asked Questions
-
To log in to Digipost, you can either use ID-porten or your personal number and a self-chosen password.
We recommend always choosing to log in with ID-porten. This gives you access to all messages from both the public and private sectors.
On ID-porten, you can choose between BankID, Buypass, Commfides, and MinID. Read more about the different login methods on ID-porten's help pages.
If you log in with a password, you only get access to read messages with lower security requirements from private companies. You do not get access to read messages from the public sector with a password.
-
You can find answers to questions about BankID on their help pages: BankID Help
You can find answers to questions about Buypass on their help pages: Buypass Help
Contact Commfides customer service if you have questions about their solutiotion.
-
You can find "Log out" under your profile in Digipost. If you use the Digipost app on a personal device, such as your own mobile phone, we recommend that you do not log out after you are done using the app.
The benefits of staying logged in to the app are that you receive notifications in the app when you get new messages, and you only need to use facial recognition, fingerprint, or mobile code to open the app the next time you use it. Even if you are logged in, the app closes and cannot be opened without your face-ID, fingerprint, or mobile code.
-
If you no longer want to use Digipost, you can go to account settings under your profile and choose "Deactivate and close account."
A better alternative than closing the account might be to give accessto someone you trust. A family member, friend, or guardian can then access your messages. The person who has access also receives email notifications when you get new messages.
To give other people access to your mailbox, go to your profile and select "Access."
When you deactivate your account you will no longer receive new messages, but you will still have access to messages you already have received. When you close your account it is no longer possible to log in. After three months all content will be deleted. It cannot be recovered.
Read more about deactivating or deleting accounts.

Contact information in Digipost?
-
We retrieve your name, personal number, and postal address from the National Population Register or Posten's address database. If you report a change to the National Population Register, Digipost will be updated after a while.
You can have multiple postal addresses registered. If there are errors in your registered personal information, you can contact customer service.
-
When you register in Digipost, your email address and phone number are retrieved from the national common contact register.
We use this to notify you when you have messages in Digipost. If you change your information in the national contact register, your profile in Digipost will not be updated.
You can change your contact information in Digipost under Profile - Personal Information. You can register up to three email addresses, but only one phone number.
-
We use your email address to notify you when you receive new messages or if we, for example, change the terms.
If the sender chooses, we also send SMS to notify you of new messages in Digipost.
You can choose whether you want notifications by email and SMS, but you cannot choose SMS from all senders.
-
The Digipost address is your unique ID in Digipost. It is used by senders who want to send you letters in Digipost.
If you have chosen not to be visible in search, other private individuals who want to share their mailbox with you or send you messages need to know your Digipost address.
The Digipost address consists of names, numbers, and letters.
Example: ola.nordmann#123A
If you change your name, the system will automatically create a new Digipost address based on your new name. If your Digipost address is incorrect, you can contact customer service.
You can find your Digipost address under Profile.
-
Every 90 days, we ask you to confirm that your contact information is correct. This is because it is important for notifications about new messages to actually reach you.
For the same reason, we also ask you to verify that your email address and phone number are correct by sending you a code via SMS and a link we ask you to open in an email. You only need to do this once, and if you have not recently registered, changed, or confirmed your email address, you can ignore emails from us containing clickable links.
Access to other's mailboxes
-
Yes, you can give access to your account to one or more people you trust. The person who gets access can read and send messages on your behalf, and also receives email notifications when you get new messages in Digipost.
To give other people access to your mailbox, go to your profile and select "Access."
-
When you have access to another person's mailbox, you can see that person's content by selecting their name at the top of the mailbox menu.
-
If you want access to a Digipost account because you have guardianship, you must send a message to Digipost kundeservice in Digipost. In the message, you must describe the situation, provide your contact information, and attach a copy of the guardianship authorization.
You will get access to the account once the County Governor has issued and approved the papers.
-
A future power of attorney regulates who can act on your behalf if you are unable to do so in the future. This can include handling your digital mail.
A future power of attorney must be signed by witnesses and can be stored in a private archive or with a lawyer.
-
If you are designated in a future power of attorney, you can get access to the person's Digipost account. Digipost needs a copy of the future power of attorney and a certificate from a doctor showing that the person is no longer able to take care of their own interests.
If multiple people are listed in the future power of attorney, you may need to send authorization or approval from the other people.
Send the information via a message in Digipost to “Digipost kundeservice” or by mail to: Posten and Bring Customer Service, Stølsmyr 10, 5542 Karmsund
-
Upon death, the customer's Digipost account will automatically be deactivated after Digipost receives notification of the death from the National Registry. After twelve months, the Digipost account will be closed, and all content will be deleted.
If you want access to the deceased's Digipost account, you must send us the following information within nine months:
- Probate certificate from the district court
- Your email address
- Your phone number

Receiving letters in Digipost
-
Digipost is used by private companies, the public and voluntary sectors, and private individuals.
When you accept the terms of use, you agree to receive mail from all senders, but you can choose to change how you receive mail from the public sector and private individuals. See the answers below.
-
When you have an account in Digipost, you usually do not need to do anything to receive digital mail from the public sector. Exceptions are if you:
- Already have an account with E-boks where you receive public mail
- Have opted out of digital communication
At norge.no you can remove the opt-out from digital communication or switch your digital mailbox from E-boks to Digipost.
-
When someone sends you an invoice in Digipost, it is often because they do not have enough information to send it as an e-invoice, or because they want to reach you through multiple channels.
Invoices you receive in Digipost are as legitimate as other invoices, but note that the payment status will not be updated in Digipost if you pay in another channels.
-
If you do not want other private individuals to send you messages, you have two options:
- Block individuals who have sent you messages previously.
- Choose not to be visible in searches by other private individuals.
You can do this under "Mail from private individuals", which is located under security and consents on your profile. Please note that if you choose not to be visible, no private individuals can send you anything in Digipost unless they know your Digipost address
-
Messages you receive in Digipost remain in Digipost until you choose to delete them. You can create folders and move messages to your own folders.
-
If the invoice is sent in invoice format, you can pay it in Digipost via our partner Neonomics. You will be redirected to Neonomics, which handles the payment from your account, and the status and payment details are visible in Digipost.
If you have paid through another channel, this will not be visible in Digipost, but you can choose to mark the invoice as paid to keep track.
Neonomics is licensed by the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway and is subject to the requirements set by the authorities for companies providing payment services.
If the invoice you receive does not have a button to proceed to payment, it means it was sent as a PDF file, and Digipost cannot extract data to offer payment. In that case, you must copy the payment details into your online bank to pay.
Sending letters in Digipost
-
When you send letters via Digipost, you can be sure that the content is encrypted and will reach the correct recipient.
If the content is sensitive, you can require the recipient to be logged in with BankID or similar to open it.
If you're unsure whether you've found the right recipient, you can ask them to share their Digipost address with you, ensuring you're sending to the right person.
-
You can send letters to all individuals who use Digipost in Norway, except for users who have blocked you from sending them messages.
-
You can search by name, postal code, and city. You will only see the first 30 results, so it's helpful to include the postal code or city if the person you’re sending to has a very common name. This way, you can avoid selecting the wrong person.
If you don't get any results, it might be because the person you are searching for:
- Does not use Digipost
- Has chosen not to be visible in search
- Has blocked you from sending them messages
If the person you're sending to uses Digipost but is not visible in search, you can ask them to share their Digipost address with you. The Digipost address can be found under their profile. When sending to someone with a Digipost address, simply type the full address in the search field, for example, "ola.nordmann#123".
-
If you've sent to the wrong recipient, unfortunately, it is not possible to correct it. This is the same in Digipost as with letters sent by regular mail. Therefore, make sure to carefully check that you have the correct recipient before sending a message in Digipost. To be completely sure you have the right person, you can ask the recipient to share their Digipost address with you. The Digipost address is a unique ID, which you can find under their profile.
Storage and archiving
-
You are welcome to upload your own documents to Digipost, as long as you have available storage space. Digipost is secure and suitable for storing important documents.
-
You can store up to 1 GB of letters and documents for as long as you want. If you have used up your storage space, you can still receive mail, but you won't be able to send or upload documents. Contact Customer Support if you have questions about storage space.
-
If you have used up your storage space, you can delete content you no longer need. Contact customer support if this is not possible or desirable.
You can still receive new messages if your storage space is full, and you will not lose anything, but you will not be able to upload your own content or send messages.
-
When you delete content, it goes to the trash. After 30 days, it will be permanently deleted from the trash and cannot be recovered. If you want the content to be permanently deleted before the 30 days have passed, you can delete it directly from the trash.
Mobile app
-
There are several benefits of using the Digipost app:
- You stay logged in for 60 days since your last use, and only need to use biometrics or a mobile code to reactivate the app.
- You will always receive notifications on your phone when you have new messages.
- You can go directly from the notification to the message.
- Improved reading experience.
- Better user experience with natural swiping and scrolling.
-
To download the latest version of the mobile app, you need:
- iOS 15.0 or later
- Android 11 or later
In some cases, you can continue using older apps and operating systems, but we recommend always using the latest version. Older versions may contain security vulnerabilities and lack functionality.
If your phone does not support the operating systems mentioned above, it may be a better solution to use Digipost via the browser on your mobile.
-
You can download the app from:
- App Store for Iphone and Ipad
- Google Play for Android phones and tablets
The apps are free to download and use.
-
In the app, you are always logged in unless you actively log out. It is enough to open the app with facial recognition, fingerprint, or phone code to activate it.
For security reasons, your login session may be downgraded to the level of a password if you haven't used the app for a while. In this case, you may find that you can open the app, but some letters will be locked, and you'll need to log in with ID-porten to access the content.
Another scenario is when the sender, often a municipality, sends a link to content located on another website instead of sending the content directly to you in Digipost. In this case, you will also need to log in again.
Security
-
Digipost is made with the same security you are used to in online banking. When you are logged in and reading your letters, it happens through an encrypted connection (SSL). All letters and personal information are stored securely, in accordance with the Personal Data Regulations. When you are logged in, automatic backup of all data stored in your account is also performed. When a sender sends a letter to you, it happens through secure data connections.
-
No, Digipost employees do not have access to your documents. A few employees are authorized to maintain and correct customer data. Digipost will act as your data processor under the Personal Data Act and ensure compliance with the terms of the Act. If Digipost employees need to see personal information as part of their work, this is logged. Digipost is also secured against unauthorized persons gaining access to personal data.
-
Unfortunately, malicious actors sometimes send fake emails that appear to come from Digipost. The easiest way to distinguish genuine emails from fake ones is to check the sender's email address. You can find it by clicking on the sender. Emails from Digipost are always sent from no-reply@digipost.no.
Digipost never uses links in emails when notifying you of new messages, so if you receive this, there is a high chance it is a fake email. Always check the address field of links you receive via email. If it is an address other than digipost.no, the link does not lead to us.
The only instance we send links in emails is when we ask you to verify your email address. These are only sent when you have:
- Registered as a new user
- Changed your email address
- Confirmed your email address
If you have not done any of these, we recommend that you delete the email.
-
The security in Digipost is very high. All messages are encrypted both when they are sent and when they are stored. All senders and recipients in Digipost have confirmed their identity with a secure electronic ID, so there are no false identities in the service.
-
When we receive notification of death from the National Population Register, the account is deactivated, which means you no longer receive messages in Digipost.
Next of kins can access the account within the first nine months after we registered the death, if they can present a probate certificate.
Twelve months after we received notification of the death, the account and all content are deleted. It cannot be recovered.
